India has always held a special place in my heart.  I love the spirit, the orderly chaos and the warmth of its people.   As a visual artist, I see and greatly appreciate the theatre and its cast of characters.  I am drawn to intensity, intimacy and authenticity in my subjects.  I gravitate to people that are in the “shadows” and not seen.  I look for stories I can tell about them and bring them to the stage.

I am inspired by Raghu Rai’s work as a photographer.  He says “A photograph has picked up a fact of life, and that fact will live forever.  It immortalizes the moment.”  I agree, and strive to do this with my work.  Although the country is rich with color, I process most of my  work in black and white to add to this sense of immortality and to capture the emotion and spirit in a more dramatic fashion.  It isolates and adds to the intimacy as well.
